Background
In October 2022, together with The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, we handed out food parcels in Lweza, locally also called Muchanga. We noticed how poor the water supply was there. The founder promised to come back with a well of the village's own, and that promise also became the reason to set up the foundation.
Goal
Its own water well for Muchanga, with a tap building and water tank, so that the village no longer depends on unsafe water far away.
Execution
In June 2023 the fundraising started, with a target amount of € 3,800 (UGX 15,180,000). Forty donations brought in € 2,343.07 through the bank. Almost the entire net proceeds (€ 2,130.00) were withdrawn on 11 July 2023, the evening before departure, and spent on the water well in Uganda. Family and the community also contributed in cash. Digging started in mid-July, and the founder went down into the well himself. By 1 August the well had been dug and sealed, and the tap building was under construction. The budget assumed a solar-powered pump; the well now runs on an electric pump connected to the village power line. Miscommunication and agreements that were not kept caused delays. In early December 2023 the well was finished. It cost a little more than budgeted: the founder paid the difference, a few hundred euros, himself. The campaign ran just before the foundation was formally set up on 28 July 2023 and was settled internally at zero.
Result
A working water well with an electric pump, tap building and water tank. At the on-site check in August 2024 the well was in use every day and gave three to four thousand residents clean drinking water; a neighbouring village collects water there too. The community had replaced broken taps themselves.
